Chart of the Day: Lithium Americas (LAC)

Ian Cooper Stock Pick of the Week Lithium Americas

Oversold opportunities don’t last forever—and Lithium Americas (LAC) may be setting up for a meaningful rebound. After trading just under $5 a share, the stock became deeply oversold and is now starting to reverse higher on several key momentum indicators, including RSI, MACD, and Williams’ %R. From here, an initial retest of $7.50 looks reasonable as momentum shifts.

But the technical setup isn’t the only thing powering this potential move.

Growing Lithium Demand Could Push Prices Higher

According to Li Liangbin, chairman of Ganfeng Lithium, global lithium demand could grow about 30% in 2026. More importantly, he noted that surging demand could push lithium carbonate prices above 150,000 yuan/ton, and possibly as high as 200,000 yuan/ton—even with this year’s ~200,000-ton surplus.

Seeking Alpha reports that lithium prices in China recently rallied 17% in one month as investors bet on booming demand from the energy storage sector. That kind of movement often signals that the bottom may already be in for the underlying commodity.

Lithium Is Quietly Becoming an AI Trade

While many traders focus on semiconductors or cloud infrastructure in the AI boom, lithium is becoming an unexpected beneficiary. Data centers and AI infrastructure require massive amounts of energy. As Albemarle CEO Kent Masters explained to Investors.com:

“North America is the fastest-growing region for stationary storage, up almost 150% year-to-date, as rising data center and AI investment in the United States increases the demand for electricity and grid stability.”

More AI → more energy demand → more storage → more lithium.

That chain reaction is fueling renewed interest in lithium producers like LAC.

The Bottom Line

With multiple oversold indicators turning upward, strengthening demand forecasts, rising prices in China, and a new link to the AI megatrend, Lithium Americas looks primed for a potential rebound. Traders looking for asymmetric opportunities in the materials and energy-storage sectors may want to keep LAC on their radar.
